Why You Shouldn’t Use a Coronavirus Mask
Masks help prevent disease droplets that you cough, sneeze or breathe from infecting others. The best masks fit snugly without gaps.
For some neurodivergent people, masking can be a way to meet societal expectations and pursue their goals. However, it can lead to mental health issues and isolation. This article describes strategies for overcoming masking.
Airflow
Many people have started wearing masks, especially those with valves to help them breathe. But a recent study from the National Institute of Standards and Technology has shown that masks do not slow down the spread of coronavirus, even when they do not have valves. In fact, the research found that it’s more likely that the air escapes around the mask rather than filtering through it. The research was published in the journal Physics of Fluids. Engineer Matthew Staymates used flow visualization techniques to capture the movement of air on camera, creating two videos. He hopes that the videos will help people understand why they should not use masks with valves.
In one video, Staymates shows how the particles that are released during speech or coughing pass through and around a mask in different orientations. The resulting images show that the mask does not stop all of the forward momentum of the particles, which results in large eddies. The images also show that the air leaks out of the top, bottom, and sides of the mask in a manner similar to the way in which water flows through an ocean.
The simulations show that the efficiency of the mask for capturing inhaled particles decreases with the particle size. This is because impaction increases with the square of the velocity, which can be much greater for larger particles than for smaller ones. The size dependence of the coughing result also is consistent with this effect.
Fit
A mask must be a close fit to effectively block the airborne pathogens. If a mask is too loose, the virus may escape around the edges and into your nose or mouth. Cloth masks with a flexible piece across the nose can mold to the shape of your face for a more comfortable fit. N95 or KN95 respirators that you see worn by frontline health workers are filtering masks, and they’re available to the general public.
You can also find some masks that are able to multitask: “Even a mask designed primarily for hydration might include other ingredients that address other skin concerns like brightening or calming the skin, like exfoliants and niacinamide,” says Garshick. If you’re prone to acne or rosacea, look for a mask that contains antioxidant-rich ingredients like niacinamide, peptides or hyaluronic acid to help calm inflammation.
Getting started with CPAP therapy involves a period of trial and error, so it’s okay to invest in a few different masks until you find one that fits well. Make sure that you perform a patch test on your skin before slathering on a new mask, and don’t be afraid to ask your healthcare provider for additional guidance. This is an important step to ensure the best Mask possible results from your CPAP treatment. The CDC recommends a minimum fit factor pass level of 100 for half masks and 500 for full facepiece respirators.
Filtration
Masks can filter out particles that might be emitted into the air by breathing. Using a mask with the right level of protection can help reduce respiratory illnesses, such as the common cold and influenza, caused by droplets containing viruses. The ability to block viruses depends on the type of mask and how tightly it fits on the face. Cloth masks generally offer lower levels of protection, surgical/disposable masks provide more, and international filtering facepiece respirators (like KN95) are the most protective.
The process of filtration involves the separation of solids from a liquid. This can be done through a porous medium, for example, filter paper, allowing only the liquid particles through and retaining the solids on top of the filter (the filtrate). best moisturizer for dry skin The process differs from sieving because in filtration the separation occurs at a multilayer lattice.
For instance, a simple test would be to fill one beaker with a mixture of solids and liquid, then pour this into another beaker. The liquid will pass through the holes in the filter, leaving behind the solids on the filter, resulting in a clear liquid (the filtrate).
Many people use masks as an expressive form of theatre to convey character and ideas. These can be used in conjunction with other theatrical techniques such as music, puppetry and movement. Several companies in North America and beyond combine these forms into visual Commedia-inspired theatre. These include In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater of Minneapolis; Arm-of-the-Sea Theatre from New York State; Snake Theater of California; and Shadowland Theatre of Toronto, Canada.
Washing
With the CDC encouraging people to wear face masks in public, it’s important to clean them regularly to avoid spreading germs. Many cloth masks can be tossed in the washer along with regular clothing, though some require hand washing. Some also have ear loops or straps that can snag on clothing and cause them to tear.
Whether you toss your mask in the washer or wash it by hand, make sure you use detergent and warm (not hot) water. The warm temperature of the wash cycle and a longer contact time with soap will kill most viruses, says MacIntyre.
She advises against using bleach, which can damage the delicate fabric of some masks. A mild soap, such as Dr. Bronner’s castile soap, works well to break down sweat, grime and oils that may cling to the mask.
Once your mask is washed, gently wring out excess water and let it air dry on a towel. If you want to speed up the process, you can toss it in the dryer on cool—but heat can accelerate fabric breakdown. You can also hang your mask on a clothes rack to dry. Once it’s completely dry, you can re-form it back into its original shape and smooth out any wrinkles. Then you’re ready to go out again. If you’re not going to do laundry right away, toss your mask in a mesh wash bag designed for delicate items until you have enough for a full load.
